NATIONAL PARK TARA

As an old Slavic legend goes, Mountain Tara got its name after the friendly god Tarr who had chosen this very mountain to spend his divine life there thanks to its outstanding natural beauties. The wonderful canyon of Drina river (1000m deep) is second in Yugoslavia after the Canyon of Tara river (1300m) in Montenegro and third in the world after the Grand Canyon of the Colorado river (1800m) in America. Drina is especially significant for its water power potentials; it is possible to erect several new hydropower plants on this river.

The annual flow of the Drina is about 12.5 cubic kilometers. The HPP ''Bajina Bašta'' was built 1966., has 4 Francis turbines, which will begun under reconstruction in 2009. Its average annual production amounts to 1,482 GWh of electric power. For the sake of better utilization of water power potential, the first pump storage power plant in Europe was built in 1982. PSPP ''Bajina Basta'' has 2 units, 307 MW each, 610m turbine head. In that time they were lowest specific speed pump-turbines in the world.
