Belgrade, in Slav meaning the White City, was founded on the 200 km long banks of Sava and Danube rivers. It was destroyed 38 times during its history, has resisted 114 wars, and has been reincarnated like a phoenix.

Although the first fortress was erected by the Celts in the third century B.C., the city was first mentioned by the name of Belgrade in the document of Pope John VIII dated 878, April 16th. During the period of the Roman Empire city was known by the name of Singidunum. The Roman well was constructed later on, in the Kalemegdan fortress, at walking distance from the city centre.

Nowadays Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and has 1.7 million inhabitants.
